How to Make Dog Training Fun for You and Your Pup

Modern dog training methods no longer involve harsh methods. The intention is to build an understanding and trust between pet and owner. As a dog lover you will in any event have no inclination to hurt your dog.

It is much better for you to train your dog yourself than to drop your dog off at a professional training site. Some trainers still use choke collars and other methods to frighten a dog into submission.

Forget about cruel methods when training your dog. The whole experience should be a delight for you and it should make your dog happier and more secure. After all, dogs thrive on pleasing their owners.

Dog training is an activity that you can work at together, so it will build a bond between you. In addition, if your dog is trained, it will have a happier life because it will not need to be locked in a cage or crate when guests arrive.

A trained dog knows not to jump on guests and to sit when commanded to do so. Dog training can also teach your dog not to bark when you tell him or her to be quiet. Dog training for your puppy or dog is so important to your dog’s happiness because the animal will know exactly what is expected of him or her.

You dog will ultimately become a family member. A dog with good manners will be loved by every member of the family. They are more likely to help care for the dog if it is a pleasure to have around. Too many disobedient dogs end up at dog shelters because their owners cannot bear their bad behavior.

Do not let your pet become a hindrance and an embarrassment to others, including your family. Your pet can give a lifetime of joy if he or she is well trained. Teaching a dog manners takes time and dedication. Show your pet gently and quietly what your want it to do.

There are different ways to tell and puppy or grown dog what you want. Use hand or voice commands. Do not expect too much of a very small puppy too soon. He or she might not be able to pay attention for long periods. Two or three minutes should be sufficient to start.

Resist the temptation to hold long, arduous training sessions with a dog or puppy that is unable to concentrate for more than a few minutes. Rather have several short sessions each day.

When holding a training session, take your dog to a part of the property, indoors or outdoors, where both of you will not be distracted. Remember that little puppies have limited attention spans and are easily distracted.

Rewarding your puppy with treats as the training advances is an important part of modern training methods. Anything will do for this, from soft bones or even dog cookies. Preferably the dog should be able to enjoy the treat in its entirety before the training session continues.

Love, praise and petting are important to your pet, even more important than treats. Make sure you pat your dog, meet its eyes and praise him or her verbally when he or she has learned well. Praise and treats will take you a long way in training your dog.

The dog has to relate the treat to the act of obedience. If you are teaching your dog to obey the command to sit, show the dog the treat then repeat the instruction until the dog does indeed sit. Then give the dog the treat right away.

The treat should be given only when the animal sits or performs the other command in your dog training plan. Please visit www.dogcollarandmore.com for further information.

Are You Looking At Dog Exercise Pens?

Dog exercise pens are not always used to exercise pets. There are times when people need a place where their dog will be in a safe, protected area where the dog can get some sunshine and relieve himself. The exercise pen provides a place where the dog can be outside and play without his owner worrying about him running into traffic or getting lost.

But dogs need to get out for walks on a regular basis though and the exercise pen should not be a substitute for real exercise. Also, most dog owners can benefit from a daily walk around the block as well.

The pen is a great option for dogs when they are puppies. It is a good place to teach young dogs to relieve themselves outside in the yard rather than inside on the floor or carpet. There are many types of pens on the market. Pens come in various sizes and most snap together so they can be easily taken apart and stored when not in use.

Two pens can be attached together to make an extra large pen for those who have a large yard. But people should make sure to buy a pen that does not have exposed screws or wires which can injure their pet.

The pen should have an access door so the pet owner need not climb over the exercise pen to attend to the dog. The door also should be locked from the outside so the animal does not try to flip the lock and try to get away. The pen needs to be high enough to keep the dog in the exercise pen, but it should be low enough so the pet owner can reach in and touch the canine.

The pen should have a support base so that the pet does not collapse it by jumping. The larger the dog, the more secure the support base has to be. This is common sense of course.

Bark! Bark!! BARK!!!

The dog barked the neighbor boy right off of his bicycle last week, and they complained. Other people have complained about his barking, and it’s getting hard to sleep through the night without getting woken at least once by his barking fits. GRRR! WOOF!!

Can anything be done?

You can learn how to deal with your dog’s excessive barking. It’s possible to correct and deal with this behavior. There are many reasons that dogs bark, and all dogs will bark from time to time. You wouldn’t want to stop your dog from barking when it’s appropriate. It’s important to be aware of the possible causes of excessive barking so that you can correct it properly. There are 3 or 4 reasons that dogs will bark too much.

BOREDOM

Dogs that don’t get enough mental or physical stimulation will sometimes bark. She gets bored, and starts to bark. Try to give her the attention and exercise that she needs. But when she does bark from boredom, don’t give her attention. Positive or negative attention could well reinforce her idea that barking is the way to get her boredom ended.

BREED

Your dog may be bred to bark a lot. Many herding dogs and hounds have this trait because of the job that they were bred to do. If you have one of these breeds, he may be barking because it’s in his genes. However, you can still train him to bark only when it’s appropriate.

SEPARATED FROM THE PACK

Since they’re pack animals, a dog’s instinct is to stay with the pack. If your dog is barking too much, it could be because he’s separated from his pack, (you) and doesn’t know how to find you again.

The main pitfall to avoid, is rewarding your dog’s barking when you come home. If your dog is barking while you’re gone, and you come home and immediately give him attention, he’ll think that it was his barking that caused you to return. To break this cycle, you have to ignore your dog if he’s barking when you first come home. Once he settles, you can initiate contact, praise him, pet him, and give him the attention that he wants.

STRANGERS

Your dog may bark when a person he doesn’t know comes near the house. This could be anyone that your dog perceives to be a threat to her territory. It can be particularly difficult to eliminate this behaviour if your dog is barking at the mailman or other delivery person because these people are guaranteed to reward the behavior every time. The mailman comes, the dog barks, the mailman leaves. It’s not an impossible cycle to break, but it takes some work.

These are just a few of the reasons that dogs may bark excessively. It is an annoying problem, but it’s good to keep in mind that there are times when you’ll want your dog to bark. Barking can be a healthy way for your dog to express himself. He just needs to know when it’s appropriate, and when it’s not.

4 Reasons that Dogs Bark:

* Strangers (intruders into the pack)

* Certain breeds

* Bored

* Strangers (intruders to the pack)

The Making Of Potty Training Dogs Success

Are you loving your dog only until he plants another bomb in your immaculate living room carpet? It seems that your home can benefit greatly from some potty training dogs tips. Here are some simple techniques that will keep you and your pet’s love fest undisturbed in a few short weeks.

Not a lot of people jump for joy at the mention of house training dogs. As a result, some people who adopt older dogs will be surprised to find them still untrained in ‘doing their business’ outside. While it may be easier to teach puppies to eliminate properly; adult dogs can still be taught correct toilet behavior anytime.

If you plan to teach your dog to not do something anymore, good luck. You won’t encounter much success. Instead, you should unseat the wrong behavior in his daily activities by substituting it with a new pattern. In this case, its learning to go outside for eliminating.

Find a suitable spot outside your house to use for his toilet needs. Bring him out for a walk fifteen minutes after he finishes eating. Walk around the designated spot saying ‘go potty’ or ‘get pooping’ whatever word or phrase you want him to associate with the activity. Repeat it until he finally does and praise him profusely right after. This will let him know that this particular code word is a signal to eliminate. Do this for a few weeks using the same pattern you have started out with. In house training dogs, patience and consistency are fundamental.

Once in a while you will still come across the dreaded mound of discharge inside your house. If he is in the middle of potty, stop him quickly and bring him outside to finish his business. Give him treats when he discharges outside successfully. If you do find the poop without the pet nearby it will be no use to yell at him anymore. He will not understand your reason for being upset and this will only serve to confuse him. To ensure this doesn’t happen again, be extra vigilant after meals.

When the accidents do happen inside your home, make sure you clean up the mess thoroughly with a deodorizing antibacterial solution immediately. This will get rid of stains and more importantly, any smell it will leave behind. The principle in potty training dogs is that they will return to their spot to do it again and they will find it by sniffing the place out. Make the canine’s cage as small as comfortably small as possible to avoid more accidents to occur indoors.

Do not bring food and water to your pet two hours before sleeping or else you might find yourself sleepily leading him out at night for toilet breaks. Take him out to walk early morning or right after he finishes nap time. When you have successfully accomplished training him to go potty outdoors, ensure that going outside is accessible and convenient for him. An open back door will encourage him to continue his newly found talent in discharging outside.

Potty training dogs is every responsible pet owner’s priority. This will keep your dog disciplined and mentally stimulated- a good preparation for other obedience tasks. More than that, your home will welcome the change and thank you for it.
