Dog Biting Problems

Out of all the dog behavioral problems, biting is considered to be the worst and the most serious. Even if your dog goes on the couch quite often, it might not present you as much problem as from a biting behavior. Some communities insist on putting the dog down if he bites someone severely. If your dog has a biting problem it can even mean the end of his life. So you have to take immediate action to solve the biting problem of your dog.

On the other hand, biting problems are common and quite normal in case of puppies. This problem arises mostly during their teething period when they have an uncontrollable urge to chew and bite on anything and everything. Though a puppy bite might break your skin it will not pose any other serious problems. However, this is the right time and age to train your puppy not to bite ever again

You do not have to be cruel or give harsh punishments to train your puppy. They are very sensitive creatures and all you need to make them repent is a firm No! or a censorious Bad Dog, whenever they try to bite you. When your puppy bites you, pull your hand away and repeat the firm phrase again and again which will make him realize that he is hurting you.

Most often a dog bites due to some psychological reasons. A dog takes a bite not just because he wants to hurt something or someone. They also bite to hold on to something or they bite a person or another dog to warn them of something, or they bite just for the joy of it. The best way to break the biting problem of your dog is to start early, when he is still a puppy.

But then, some dogs are naturally aggressive and bite because they are inherently temperamental. To take care of such dogs you have to send them to an obedience school.

If your dog shows biting tendencies then you have take it very seriously and get help as soon as possible from a professional dog trainer, as an average pet owner is not equipped to address this serious problem.

If you have a pooch with biting problems in your neighborhood, the best defence is to be prepared with a bottle of pepper spray that is specially formulated to combat biting dogs. Never hesitate to use the pepper spray if any dog tries to bite you. Or, you could opt for a friendlier approach by offering a beef jerky.

Protect Your Dog With A Life Jacket

Dogs love the to be in the outdoors, but if any of your adventures involve the water, make sure that not only you has safety gear on. Your dog is your best friend, and it makes sense for your dog to wear a life jacket if you’re out for a day of sun and sea. The term doggy paddle is a bit of a misnomer as not all dogs can swim. The term is just used to describe a type of swimming stroke. There are some dogs, like Pincers, Dobermans, and Boxers who have a lot of trouble in water. Some dogs dislike water and will only swim if they really need to.

A dogs natural abilities in the water vary depending on the breed, size, physical strength and health. For those who own a puppy, it is important to use a gentle approach when introducing him to the water. Introducing the pup to water through a wading pool and slowly moving on to bigger ponds is sensible. You also want to look into what kind of water conditions your dog will be exposed to. Due to the calmer and gentler water movement of a wading pool, a puppy adapts better to playing around. Excess movement will make your dog anxious and complicate the process of teaching him to swim.

By having a life jacket on your dog, it can give peace of mind not only yourself, but also to your dog, while doing outdoor activities. Not only will a dog life jacket keep your dog floating when he is too tired to swim, but it will also reduce his anxiety and potential disorientation if he should fall into the water. Whether human or dog, life jackets are an essential, beneficial safety device. It is wise to keep one for yourself as well as your dog in your boat, on ferries, on planes and in the car.

Don’t be surprised if your dog throws a bit of a fuss when you first try to have it wear a life jacket. Before you head out on a trip, get your dog used to the life jacket by putting it on him at home. This will alleviate some of the stress that can occur by wearing a new accessory. Arrange a pleasant first experience around water for your dog. By ensuring this, you are increasing the chances of them loving the water.

When selecting your dogs life jacket, you’ll want to keep in mind certain guidelines like the size and weight of your dog. The materials used are also important, so get something that is breathable and durable. Never leave your pet alone wearing a life jacket, as there is a risk of entanglement. Also, be sure to get a life jacket with buoyancy ratings.

How To Deal With An Aggressive Dog

Having a dog that is aggressive can be a major problem especially if you have children around. If you find your dog is getting aggressive there are a few different options available to you.

The first option presented to you would be to just say goodbye to your dog (not necessarily the best option). Many people love their dog’s and treat them as part of the family and would never even consider this option but for others it is the way they go.

If you do choose to get rid of your dog make sure you take him somewhere safe. Never just let a dog go especially if they are aggressive. Dogs are no longer breed to be wild animals so they would be truly unsafe out on their own.

A better option would be to get your dog trained or train him yourself. There are many different classes you can take your dog to and most everywhere has dog trainers.

One type of dog training is clicker training. If clicker dog training is done correctly you will see a major improvement in your dog’s behavior. The beauty of clicker training your dog is that after a while of using the clicker you will have a dog that listens to your commands without the need of using the clicker or dog treats.

Timing is everything when using the clicker dog training method. If you get this wrong all of your effort will be wasted.

When your dog follows your command you need to immediately click your clicker and administer a treat to your dog. If you click to late your dog will only know that you are being very nice and giving him lots of treats.

You also should keep the clicker tucked in your hand so your dog can not see it. Another thing you can do is click using your tongue when your dog has gotten accustomed to the sound of clicking.

No matter how you are going to train your dog make sure you are using positive training methods. Not only will negative methods hurt your dog but he is likely to become worse behaved over time.

Clicker training for dogs is one of the most effective ways of training your dog if it is done correctly. Learn more about dog obedience training by visiting us at safedogobedienceadvice.com.

The addition of a pet to a city apartment may not seem like a welcome one at first. Our places of residence are often small and cramped, and another living being in our homes could add to the clutter some more.

It is a fact, though, that having a pet live with us will bring us entertainment, companionship and joy, among other things. That is definitely the reason that there are so many people living in city apartments with pets.

Depending on which pets people like more, you’ll always find that they’ll call one animal more suitable for city apartments than others. I’m going to give an objective look at the situation, listing some pros and cons about each animal in such a setting.

First, let’s take a look at dogs. On the plus side, they’ll be extremely loyal and generally more active than cats are. Dogs will likely follow you often, while cats tend to do the opposite.

When you are just too busy and cannot give them the attention they need, a dog is not going to be the best pet for you. Now, a person who likes to have a friendly companion around who is always there will surely appreciate this with regards to dogs.

Cats, on the other hand, will usually stay on their own, needing a bit less attention than dogs do. They’ll still come around and cuddle with you, but they’re generally known to be lower maintenance.

As far as activity goes, dogs will need to go outside several times per day. If you like the idea of getting outside for some fresh air, you’ll enjoy the experience of walking a dog.

On the flip side, having an indoor cat means that you won’t have to take it outside at all. Just maintain the litter box and you will not have to think about going outside.

Well, it might seem like having a cat in the city is easier than having a dog. Nevertheless, so many folks just can’t get around the love they have for dogs.

Types of Aggression In Dogs

Aggressive dogs can be a problem for everyone. They can be especially frightening for small children and adults alike. Even though some breeds are more aggressive than other breeds there is usually an underlying reason that a dog is aggressive. If you find out why your dog is acting out you can tailor your training methods to curb his aggression. You will be a more contented pet owner if you can trust your dog to be calm in most situations.

Sometimes aggressive behavior is because your dog wants to establish dominance. Dogs are pack animals and there is always a hierarchy to the pack. The alpha dog is the ring leader and the other dogs follow suit. Proper training will establish you as the alpha dog or the leader. Do not allow your dog to think of himself as the leader or you will continuouslyhave difficulties. Even so your dog may still try to establish his dominance over other dogs or animals and this may be the cause of his dominance aggression.

Dogs can also act aggressively because they are protecting their territory. Your dog thinks certain things are “his” including you, your home and your family. While this can often be a good thing in certain situations it can create problems with visitors or neighbors if it gets out of control. If you dog is excessively aggressive in protecting his territory his behavior may need to be curbed.

Often a dog will strike out from fear. Something scares your dog and rather than retreat he lashes out and attacks. The dog will start growling, pull his ears back and tuck his tail between his legs. Many times this type of aggression is mistaken for direct aggression. Fear aggression is mostly caused by a situation that has frightened the dog. He is lashing out because he is frightened and does not know how to handle that fear.

Aggressive behavior can sometimes occur for no apparent reason. However this aggression is usually misdirected. Something happens that triggers anxiety within the dog but he is not able to react to the actual stimuli so he lashes out on something else. This may be a reason for some inexplicable dog fights between 2 or more animals. The dog is just not able to act on the real cause.

There can also be biological reasons for aggression. Many times a female dog can be aggressive when they are nursing a new litter of pups. This type of aggression is understandable as she is protecting her litter from any perceived threats. There is also always a possibility of a medical problem if your dog is overly aggressive so taking your dog to the vet for a thorough examination is always recommended.

Spaying your female dog and neutering your male dog will usually help alleviate excessive aggression. Your training efforts will also be easier and more effective. If you are not in the business of breeding dogs, spaying and neutering is the responsible thing to do.

If you consider the reasons why your dog may be acting aggressively you can tailor your training methods and curb the aggression. You can work with your dog’s own specific needs and have more success.

How to Get Rid of Mange

Mange is a illness that many animals contract in particular dogs and cats. It is surprisingly prevalent, but is also easy to diagnose. Here we take a look at the way in which mange occurs, how to spot mange in pets and how it should be approached.

The requirements of knowing how mange occurs cannot be stressed too highly. Mange is caused by miniature mites that live in the animal’s fur, and the female mange mite will dig into the skin of the animal in order to lay her eggs. This can cause an unwanted reaction in the dog or cat, and leads to persistent irritation and suffering as well as other symptoms that we will look at later. The mites themselves have a life span of a short period but they reproduce at a rapid rate. It is when the number of mites increases rapidly that the pet can become susceptible to mange.

Recognizing mange is relatively easy as the signs are visible and unusual. The first thing that may be noticed is more noticeable scratching, particularly in areas where the hair is at its shortest – these are where the mange mite likes to live – and this may be accompanied by loss of hair in these areas. While in only certain spots in the first instance it is often the case that mange spreads and in the worst cases can cover the body of the animal entirely.

Further symptoms can include lack of appetite, lethargy and red areas on the skin – so called red mange – that are painful and present great discomfort for the animal.

If mange is noticed it is best to commence treatment straight away, as keeping the illness under control is vital to treating the condition. Mange is rarely a danger to life but can be dangerous if allowed to get out of control. It is also very distressing for the animal, whose welfare should be considered at all times. Instances of mange transferring from dogs or cats to humans are known to have occurred and the most common form of mange – known as sarcoptic mange – is considerably contagious and occurs in humans as scabies.

It is so that mange mites are specific to only one species – a dog mite will live best on dogs only, a cat mite on cats – but they can exist for short periods on other than their natural host. For this reason it is best to keep uninfected pets away from those with the mange to be safe and sound.

Dog Training Collar

Perhaps the dog in your own life is a bit naughty, he does not pay attention to you whenever you instruct him to do something. Are you looking for a means by which to rectify this naughty behavior?

A dog training collar of some kind may be the solution to your problem. They come in heaps of diverse sorts. There are martingale collars, kind of choke chain idea without the chain, they tighten up a bit if the dog drags too much.

There are dog collars which operate by means of a remote control device which provides a blend of noise and pulsation or shock correction. These more often than not contain a big number of settings of sound and pulsation so in between the two you have a vast number of correction options.

If your pet is a nightmare to take for daily walks for the reason that he chases cats, other dogs, individuals, automobiles in fact everything and any other thing which moves then he positively has to have teaching.

Walking a dog resembling that is wearing and in all honesty I don’t consider the animal gets a great deal out of it when you are all the time requiring to scold him.

Do you know your animal’s breed for certain? Perhaps he is pedigree and in this situation there will be no issue about it, however if he is a mix, can you identify a mix of what?

Do you know that it is possible to have a DNA check done on your animal, taking roughly a 7 days to sort out, which were able to notify you merely whatever strains are in your own dog.

This is going to be a vast help to you to know whichever sort of teaching technique would suit the dog best.

Perhaps you own a gun dog which you need for recovery whenever you have been shooting. This type of animal has to be well under control.

These combination sound and vibration dog collars are usually completely waterproof so that is fine news for animals who have to be in water from time to time.

If your pet difficulty is that the animal pulls badly whilst walking there is an alternative innovatory looking dog instruction collar which I have just discovered. This comprises of a part of dog lead that reaches over the muzzle of the animal and joins beneath the jaw to an additional piece that joins the dog lead but at the back the head, not the neckline.

Vets, trainers and individuals similar to the RSPCA all believe that animals act in response quicker to this type of remedial restraint than other types of dog schooling dog collars.

As with any merchandise there is a gigantic choice of these dog collars to select from. You just have to decide which aspect of the dog’s conduct you want to change then begin your search.

How to Stop Dog Jumping

If you have ever owned a dog, one time or another you have probably dealt with this problem. Your dog is so happy to see you that he jumps up on you getting his muddy paws all over your new suit or dress. Or even worse, during his excitement he jumps on a smaller child and knocks them down or scratches the child’s face, arms or legs.

Well, I am sorry, but this could be all your fault. Let me explain:

You see, when your dog was just a little pup, you would be so excited to see that little guy that he would come to you in his cute puppy way and jump on your ankle (or barely reach your knee cap at this point) and you of course would bend over and pet him or even pick him up.

By doing this, your puppy just learned an important lesson: when I jump up on my owner I get the reward of love! Your dog doesn’t know the difference between the small pup that he once was and the large dog that he is now. All he knows is what you taught him early in his life, when dad or mom gets home I’ll run over and jump on him to show him how much missed him and they will love me back.

Is it bad manners to have a dog jump on you?

You have to put your foot down and make it clear that jumping is no longer an accepted behavior. When is jumping O.K.? Many owners of toy breed dogs or smaller dogs expect their dog to jump up. This is totally up to you. But, when any dog jumps on an unsuspecting guest, it can cause a bit of an awkward moment. This is why teaching your dog the “off” command is also a good idea. You can train your dog to jump on your command; we will get into that later.

For larger dog breeds, there really is no debate on this matter. You should either never allow him to jump or at the very least work the “off” or “no jump” command in to their regular training. After all it is one thing to have to deal with scrapes or soiled cloths due to your own dog, it is quite another to have to deal with him jumping on a guest or stranger.

Reasons why dogs jump.

Most often dog jumping happens out of pure excitement. Usually greeting an owner after a long absents or when adrenaline is running high. Some dog don’t jump at all accept when greeting their owner after a long day away.

A much more serious problem is when a dog jumps to display his dominance over you or whatever he is jumping on (another dog, a child or guest). Hailing from a pack mentality, dogs live by a hierarchy of social ranking and order. One of the behaviors a dog will use to exert his dominance over a lesser animal is to show his physical superiority by jumping up on or placing his paw or paws over the other dog’s shoulders.

Well, how do you know if you have an over excited dog that likes to jump on you or a dog that is trying display is dominance? This is fairly easy to determine, if your dog only jumps on you upon returning home from a long absents, you needn’t worry, this is just a bad habit that can be corrected. If you find that your dog jumps on you or others in many different situations, then you have a communication problem with the hierarchy in your house and it might be a good idea to brush up on your alpha dog skills.

On the other hand, if he jumps in a variety of situations, you could be dealing with more of a dominance issue and symptoms of a more complicated problem of communication and attitude. The longer this type of behavior is allowed to happen the harder it will be to regain control of the jumping issues. At this point and time I would highly suggest that you study alpha-dog techniques (tip: you can find more great information on dealing with a dominate dog over at Ez Dog Training At Home, you can find the link for this web site at the bottom of this page)

Your actions are key to eliminating this annoying and possibly dangerous habit of your dogs. As with most all dog training consistency in your training will speed up his learning curve and prove to be more reliable. To stop dog jumping you have to make it clear to your dog that jumping is no longer tolerated.

Staying with your training routine day in and day out is the only way you will be able to beak this habit of your dogs jumping. Taking a day off and not fallowing though with your training can undermine weeks worth of work, so stick to your plan.

Dog trainers world wide agree that the most effective way to curb unwanted behavior (jumping) in your dog is also the the easiest, and that is to simply ignore the bad or unwanted behavior and reward the wanted or good behavior. There is no need to yell or over correct. Negative attention is still attention and that is what your dog seeks when jumps on you.

Here is the best way to stop dog jumping.

When your dog jumps on you or is about to jump on you, turn your back to him and ignore this behavior. As soon as he has all four paws on the ground praise him. If he goes to jump again turn your back, cross your arms and face away.

When your dog goes to jump on you, turn your back on him right away. Dogs understand body language much more than the spoken word. So, what you need to do here is use your posture to get your message though loud and clear.

Again, as soon as he has all four paws back on the ground praise him lavishly. Don’t worry that you may be confusing him, dogs have a very short “training memory” and they can only comprehend the reaction you give to his behavior at that moment.

Continue this cycle and you will notice that he will clam down rather quickly.

Are you a dog owner? If so, then you will undoubtedly agree that sharing your life with a dog has it’s shares of ups and downs. There are wonderful moments, and then there are others that are extremely challenging for all kinds of reasons. The fact remains however, that through it all, dogs are still “man’s best friend” in my opinion…it is just harder to make friends with some dogs than with others.

With our current dog, an eight year old miniature schnauzer, we have definitely faced a few challenges. Within a short time of him coming into our lives, we discovered that, while a smart and loving little guy, he also:

1. Growled and jumped on anyone who came to visit, and barked at absolutely everything he saw.

2. Absolutely hated going to the groomers to get clipped.

So what did we do? We did some research and spoke with our vet to discover some strategies and techniques that we could use to help make him a “good friend”. Here is how we resolved these issues.

1. It took a while to help him with the growling/jumping/barking problem because, as a good little schnauzer it was very important to him to protect his territory. Unfortunately, him being territorial, meant he was scaring all of our friends and neighbors. So we tried tons of training methods to teach him better manners: reward systems, squirting water, coins in a can, newspapers, you name it, we probably tried it. Nothing really worked. So we discussed the problem with our vet who suggested a remote training collar. Not really knowing anything about how they worked, we did more research and finally decided to try the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer. Perhaps the thing we liked the best about it was that it had 9 different stimulation levels so that we had a lot of flexibility in controlling the settings, so that we could always give the least amount of stimulation that would be effective. In addition there is a tone-only training option that provides even more versatility. We also decided to get the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, 300 yds. which allows for training within a 300 yard range. What was the best thing about the Innotek Ultrasmart? It worked. In no time at all, our little dog learned how to not scare our guests, and we were able to have visitors again!

2. Now the problem of our dog being stressed by going to the groomers was really more an issue of training us as opposed to him. We decided that by learning to clip him each month at home, we could be done with the process much quicker, and he would be more comfortable, and happier as a result. So we invested in the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper, and have to honestly say that doing so has made such a difference in his life…and ours. We chose these clippers because Oster has a reputation for lasting forever, and we didn’t want to buy new ones each year. Plus, the reviews on them stated that they did a quiet, smooth, and quick job, which was just what we wanted. The Oster A5 Turbo Clipper has worked out great for us, with the only slight glitch being that the clippers can get warm, but we easily solved this by cleaning and changing the blades, and using Oster Kool Lube. They are really very easy to use, the challenge for us was just learning to get the cut right! But happily, all the challenges in grooming our little guy each month have completely vanished, and the process is now actually smooth and stress-free for all of us.

Having a dog can, and should be a joy, but it often takes a little work to get to that point. In our case, we had a little help from the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer, and the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper. But the investment and time we took to use these tools to help make life with our dog better for us and for him have been so worthwhile. The reward has been a merry, little schnauzer whose intelligence, loving nature, and desire to please truly make him our best friend!

Discover how your dog can learn to become a happy and well-mannered best friend. Learn more about the Innotek Ultrasmart Remote Trainer and the Oster A5 Turbo Clipper, read the reviews of the product from other happy dog owners, and see if they are right for you and your dog.
