Choosing Kitty’s Name
Picking a name for a kitten, or any pet for that matter, is rather like choosing a name for a baby. People have all manner and ways of picking a name for their pet. In the case of pet owners, they are faced with more things to consider in making the final decision. So how do you go about naming your new kitten?
Naming a kitten by the way it looks is quite common and acceptable except that the owner sometimes fail to take into consideration the fact that the kitten will undergo physical and character changes as it grows older. So don’t be precipitate in naming your kitten. Is there a name associated with the color of his fur that comes to mind? Better still observe him for a few days for something that will inspire you. How will you describe your kitten’s character? Is he feisty and up to mischief already? It could also be that he looks like he cannot harm a fly. Naming your cat after his personality can be one of your options.
Is there another pet in the house? If there is, perhaps you can choose a name that will be a good match (Mutt and Jeff, Batman and Robin?). If you don’t want to choose names that are similar, how about names that are opposites? In some families, the name of a departed pet is kept alive by giving the same name to the succeeding pets. Gran used to have one, but it died.” – And so you name your cat Smudge to fit the family pattern.
Whereas pets have pet names before, this no longer holds true today because pets are also given names of people. The big majority of pets today have people names – Bruno, Max, or Otto instead of Spot, Blackie, etc. Do you have a preference either way?
The most important thing to consider when choosing a name for your kitten is what you’re going to be comfortable yelling out of the window at 2 am when kitty hasn’t returned home yet! Make a list of all the names you can live with. Put each name on a separate piece of paper. Fold or crease and put all in a box or some container. Whoever is going to be mainly responsible for the welfare of the kitty should be the person to draw one piece of paper out. He will read the name chosen, much like reading the winner in a door raffle.
