The Importance Of Using Dog Collars In Dog Training

Dog training is very important in raising a dog. Having a dog trained does not just mean making your dog follow whatever you like him to do. Training is important so you can communicate with your dog. Being able to communicate with your dog enables the dog to understand and obey you.

Teaching a dog with some basic commands enables the dog to learn obedience and discipline. It is a must that the dog be trained while it is still young because older dogs are harder to train. If the dog has discipline and knows how to obey you, you can keep control of it whilst you are in public. With the use also of dog collars, you can also control the pet from misbehaving or chasing other people or pets in public.

Having a dog collar tied on the neck of the dog is essential, especially when training a dog. There are many benefits of using dog collars. You can put identification tags on it, so even if the dog is lost it can be returned back to you. Using collars is also a great way to accessorize the dog. There are some that are custom made and come in different colors.

There are dog training techniques that need the use of dog collars. The use of collars in dog training is that it aids the training in taking control of the dog by interrupting it when the dog misbehaves. A type of dog collar which is called a choke collar helps the trainer in training the dog. The trainer can tighten the collar on the neck of the dog but not too tight that can injure the dog when the dog shows misbehavior.

There is also a type of dog collar that can release a mild electric shock or impulse. It comes with a remote control where the trainer will just push the button on the remote when he wants to punish the dog because of the bad behavior. This type of collar can also be used in training the dog not to stay away from your house.

Dog collars help in dog training but it is important that the owner must have enough knowledge in choosing the right collar and in providing the right dog training. It is highly recommended consulting an expert in choosing the right collar and in training the dog, especially for the dogs that are very aggressive and hard to control.

At What Age Can A Dog Be Neutered

Dog owners have differing opinions on whether the dog should be neutered or not. Dog owners have varied reasons for neutering the dog but the most common reason is to reduce the population of unwanted and homeless dogs. It is a dog owner’s responsibility to make sure that the pet would not contribute to the population of stray dogs.

Neutering, a surgical procedure that is done on a dog to remove the testicles has the prime purpose of preventing reproduction. Would you believe that neutering aside from minimizing the number of homeless dogs also promises to give the dog longer, healthier and happier life. With the removal of the testicles, the risk for testicle cancer is removed as well. Neutering would be very beneficial especially for first time dog owners as bad behavior is controlled. The inclination to roam is lessened with neutering thus accidents that can result to the death of the pet is avoided.

However, dog owners have many reservations on the right time to neuter the dog . Neutering has many unfounded beliefs. Neutering done at an early age is believed to have a significant impact on the personality and physical growth of the pet.

The playful and affectionate nature are some of the reasons why most people would choose to have a dog for a pet thus many owners would not dare neuter the dog at an early age because of the belief that the procedure will make the pet less playful and affectionate. Dog experts assert that these notions regarding neutering are untrue. The personality and the physical development of the dog will not be affected at all. So what is the right age to neuter the pet?

Except for newborn puppies, dogs can be neutered anytime. Pets that are obtained from the breeder will know the right age of the dog but this will not be possible if the dog is adopted from a shelter. Dogs at any age can be neutered as long as the testicles have descended but ideally, the procedure must be done before the dog has attained sexual maturity. Dog experts generally recommend neutering at 6 months of age especially for small breeds that reach puberty early. Dog experts recommend neutering large breeds at about 1 year of age as Great Danes, GSD and other large dogs take longer to mature sexually.

Standing Your Ground With A Dog Harness

Man’s best friend can always tire man out with his frenzied enthusiasm. By getting a dog harness you be able to say goodbye to getting your heels dragged and at the mean time keep you and Fido safe.

A harness can be your dog’s best friend without him knowing it. This gadget can prevent dogs from experiencing whiplash which can injure their neck and windpipe. This is why most people prefer a harness over a collar when walking their dogs. They restrain the dog by putting more pressure on his chest rather than tugging on the neck.

You dog might not be happy the first time he tries it on because it can feel a little bit restrictive. You might want to consider letting get used to the feel of the harness before taking him out to walks. Letting your dog undergo training sessions is a great idea too.

When you purchase a harness, it will be a good idea to bring your dog along. Check out the fit of the harness. Ill fitted harnesses can injure him. You can also measure him up if bringing him is quite a hassle. Learn the proper way to measure your dog first. If you think you can’t get this right, buy an adjustable harness.

You might want to choose a comfortable harness too. There are a lot of varieties of harness but not all of them are perfect for your dog. Select the material of the harness basing on the fur type of your dog. If you have a fine furred dog, get him a fine nylon one.

Be a responsible dog owner by constantly check the fit of your harness from day to day because dogs can have fluctuating weights.

Keep your dog at bay without causing harm. Get a dog harness. Believe me; Fido won’t keep a grudge on you for doing so.

At What Age Can A Dog Get Pregnant?

Do you know when your dog can get pregnant? Taking a dog for a pet is a big responsibility – much much more than the task of providing the pet with food. The association of man and dog has been going on for hundreds of years. Dogs have protected and have helped man in a lot of capacities. For these reasons, a dog owner has the responsibility of knowing when the pet will attain full sexual maturity.

Even non-dog lovers will surely be attracted by adorable puppies. Puppies would bring lots of fun times to the family especially if there are children as kids and dogs are known to form legendary attachment. For some dog owners, the arrival of new puppies will be a much awaited moment. Due to financial, time or space constraints, dog owners would not want to be saddled with the responsibility of caring for additional dogs.

If no one would want to care for the puppies the wee things will simply be abandoned. When supply of puppies exceeds potential owners, animal authorities would have no other recourse but to dispose the pups the humane way. To control the number of homeless dogs, a pet owner has to know the reproductive cycle of the dog. It is always good to know how to tell if your dog is pregnant.

Dogs are known to differ not only in personalities but in reproductive cycle as well. Some dogs commonly retain the high spirits so that it would seem as if they don’t mature. The same thing is true with sexual maturity as some breed would be sexually mature at an early age and other would be considered as “late bloomers”. Generally, small breeds can get pregnant at an early age as these small dogs would come into heat at 6 or even at 4 months of age. It is quite ironic really because large dogs, the breed that could have been ready to carry puppies because of the size are the ones that get sexually mature at a later age. Large breeds of dogs like a Great Dane or a Saint Bernard would come into first heat and would accept the attention of male dogs after reaching 18 to 24 months of age. The pet can get pregnant if mated within the 7 to 10 days in heat period.

Small breed come into heat at an early age but breeding is not recommended if the dog has not yet passed the 2nd or 3rd heat cycle. Small breed mature sexually at an early age but their bodies are still developing. A young dog may not be physically mature to carry and to care for the puppies.

Yes! You finally got the puppy of your dreams! You?ve already been planning his life before he even stepped into your home. But hold on?aren?t you forgetting the other aspect of owning a puppy? Yes, I mean house training a puppy what else? Playing with them is great fun but do not forget that you need to teach them the right behavior early on so they will grow up to happy and confident dogs. If you are new at this, it?s alright–everyone was at one point. Here are four really helpful and essential tips to help you get started.

1. You need to set yourself firmly in the position of authority. The foundation of a healthy relationship with your dog is the correct view of both of your positions in the ultimate hierarchy of things. It’s easy to be indulgent with a cute puppy– but if you don’t nip it in the bud, a domineering and bratty dog will be your future headache. Start teaching him how to submit to you by giving him simple commands to obey. Use a firm voice when you say ‘Sit!’ and gently push him down to that position. Once he understands that you are his superior other commands will be easier to teach.

2. Your puppy must be potty trained. One of the first things in house training a puppy is proper toilet manners for canines. Bring him outside to poop fifteen minutes after every meal. Choose a specific area for his discharge and walk around it until he finally unloads. Immediately praise him when he does. Follow up on this every day for two weeks and he will begin to understand. If he makes a mistake and you find dog poop or pee indoors, scrub the area clean with a deodorizer to mask the smell, lest he returns to reclaim his spot.

3. Your puppy will need to develop and grow his social skills. The best time for socializing a puppy is anytime before 3 months of age. Some puppy training tips you can use for socializing the dog is to invite your friends over to meet him. Bring him to busy places and let him play with other healthy animals. Also let him get used to being groomed so that he will not get aggressive and whiny when people pet and touch him in the future. Properly socialized puppies grow up to be healthy, happy and self-assured dogs.

4. You must speak the language puppies understand. The best and probably the only language most animals understand is rewarding him for being good and scolding him for being bad. That part is easy; the trick lies in doing it consistently every day. You cannot reprimand him for being overly aggressive at play one day and the next day overlook the same behavior. This confuses the puppy. Be consistent in your training.

That just about wraps it up. It sounds too simple right? If you read up on other puppy training tips you will find they all branch out from these four foundational issues. Now you have the knowledge. Use it well and be on your way to a responsible, loving puppy training expert in no time at all.

Tips On Taking Photos Of Your Cat

You’ll love the comments you receive as your friends look at the many photographs of your pets around you home. However, these pictures serve another very important role in emergencies and insurance, can provide photo’s of your missing cat if they are lost. The chances of your cat being returned safely increase significantly if you are able to provide pictures on posters that you can put up in your area or on our Lost Pets Register.

Taking pictures of cats can be difficult because they can move very quickly and unexpectedly, they are their own masters so do not expect any help from them. If you want to get good pictures of the most important thing is time, patience and a little preparation.

Ideally when starting off to not use a flash, rely on natural lighting as much as possible. If you have to use a flash then a fill flash would be recommended. The flash from point and shoot camera’s will be directed straight at the cat, resulting in some rather unflattering and unnatural poses and you run the risk of getting red eye or the cat’s reflective eyes in the shot.

Most people these days have a digital camera, if so just set your camera to an automatic setting (sports or action mode if possible), this automatically sets the cameras aperture and shutter speed. Remember to let the camera do the work; all you have to do is focus on the shot.

When selecting a background make sure it’s as plain as possible, the grass in your garden, a plain carpet or patio would be ideal. Be sure to choose a spot that has plenty of natural lighting and is uncluttered or at least well into the background so it’s out of focus.

When you begin to take pictures get down to the cat’s level which may mean lying on the ground, try to avoid taking pictures from above as this will give your cat a less natural pose. If your camera is equipped with a telephoto lens this will enable you to take close up snaps without actually moving. Remember that most cats will automatically come up to you and rub against you which means they will be close enough for a good shot but when your raise your camera make it seem like you are not interested in your cat.

Also remember to keep as quiet as possible and make sure no one else is around to distract them. You need to wait until your cat is either focused on something else or is tired and let your cat relax and do whatever he does naturally. It may take 10 minutes, or it may take an hour but if you are patient they will relax and look very natural, now take as many pictures as possible. If he does something cute, slowly focus the camera and take the shot but do not make any quick moves.

Take as many pictures as possible. If you are using a digital camera there’s nothing stopping you from taking hundreds, the odds are in your favour the more pictures you take.

There you go, it’s no great secret. Remember the trick is to be quiet, patience and have a lot of free time. Don’t be expecting to spent ten minutes and get great shots of your cat because honestly it’s not always that simple. Put aside one morning or afternoon, remember the simple tips and you will get those special extra shots of your beloved cat.

If you want the little extra unusual shot like your cat likes to drink from the tap, ensure your camera is always nearby, batteries charged, and as soon as your cat starts to drink slowly pickup the camera, focus and shoot away. These kinds of pictures take a little more planning and produce that little extra special picture.

Size Considerations

As with Dogs, Crates come in a wide array of shapes, sizes and designs. The trick to purchase a Crate that is large enough for your dog to be able to comfortably stand or lie down in. He or she should also be able to turn around completely when in their Crate. That way they will not feel over confined. One of the keys to Crate Training an older Dog is to set the Crate out in a place where he is familiar with already, and likes to spend time. Maker the Crate welcoming for your Dog with toys and blankets. That way you will encourage his perception of the Crate as a place he enjoys spending time in.

The Training Begins…

After you have decided on the perfect Crate for your pet the real work begins! Crate training an older Dog is not instantaneous. Instead, the best attitude to cultivate is that of curiosity. Interest your Dog in the Crate by placing a couple of his favorite treats inside. Leave the door of the crate open at all times during this initial settling in period. After a time, your Dog will enter the Crate to retrieve the snack. He will most probably exit the Crate almost immediately afterwards. Do not be concerned by this. Instead, leave toys and blankets in the Crate in order to entice him in there. The next stage is after a few days, put his Food bowl and water bowl in the Crate. By this time he will not be scared of this environment and will happily enter. With encouragement he will soon learn to associate his Crate with fun and food!

At a time when your Dog is totally comfortable within the Crate you may begin shutting the door behind him whilst he is eating. It is important to be on hand to monitor this as the door must be opened the minute he has finished his meal. This way, your Dog will consider the Crate Door being closed or opened as positive for him. As he would have learned to associate pleasurable feelings towards food and drink to being inside of the Crate.
