Dogs bark because we humans want our dogs to bark. For years our domestication process and selective breeding has allowed our dogs to develop their barking abilities. Due to our domestication of our dogs, the dogs bark to get attention. They also bark to show their excitement. Repeated behavior is caused by reinforcement with training and lifestyle. So teaching dogs to communicate is dependent on the reward given. If you reward your dog when it barks it will continue to do so. It is important to figure out what your dog is trying to tell you before you reward your dog and then act appropriately at the time of the barking.

Try to figure out what your dog is trying to tell you. If it is out of a need for attention, the best way to break this cycle of excessive barking is to wait for him to be quiet, then give him positive attention. Remember that by acknowledging the barking you will reinforce the barking and not the behavior you want. Waiting until he quiets will teach him that he gets more attention if he’s quiet.

Because dogs are territorial, they will bark at people approaching them and when they see someone walking across the street or on the next block. The best way to stop the barking is to distract your dog when he starts to bark. Break his focus with a treat or play with him. Every time the barking habit is broken it reinforces the message that he will be rewarded when he stops barking.

Ultimately it is important to learn why your dog is barking. Once you know what your dog is barking about, then you can redirect, refocus or reward your dog for his barking. It’s up to you to take the appropriate action depending on the situation.

Using your voice to persuade your dog to learn something new is a great dog training aid. Use your dog’s name before you state any command, and use a persuasive tone of voice. What is a persuasive tone? It’s best to use a low, but pleasant, firm tone when dog training.

When dog training, you should talk to your dog throughout the dog training session. Try teaching your dog to retrieve and fetch with dog training aids such as a light dumbbell. Dog training aids don’t need to be something from a pet store. Items such as dumbbells are great dog training aids.

Always keep a happy tone with your dog when training. Becoming angry will never assist in your training efforts. It will only serve to confuse your dog and make him anxious.

Your dog always wants to please you. Keep this firmly in mind when dog training. If your dog does not understand what you want him to do straight away, come back to the art of persuasion. And exercise patience with your dog.

Once your dog understands what you’re asking him to do, he will probably be happy to repeat the action over and over again. Remember, your dog’s prime motivation is to please you, so once he finds an action that pleases you, he’ll be happy to do it again and again.

For example, if your dog does not understand what you want him to do with the dumbbell that you have selected as your dog training aid, try gently placing the dumbbell in your dog’s mouth and holding his jaws closed around it. Be careful not to graze your dog’s teeth on the dumbbell.

Dog training sessions should be fund. They are a good opportunity to spend quality time – just you and your dog. Dog training certainly takes time and effort. Depending on your dog, you may need to be very patient with your dog training efforts.

Once you have placed the dumbbell in your dog’s mouth several times, encourage your dog to take the dumbbell from your hand himself.

Once your dog understands the taking of the dumbbell, you need to extend the reach of the item. Place the dumbbell on the ground in front of your dog and ask him to “Retrieve” or “Fetch”. Then start moving the dumbell further and further away from him. Your dog will soon get the idea.
