Use These Tips To Improve Your Dogs Behavior

Having a well-trained dog can provide your home with a happy balance. When you are consistent with your dog, he knows what to expect. Once a dog is trained, no one will have to worry about leaving the animal home alone. It might not have been an easy road, but you will soon know that the time you spent on training your dog will have been worth it.

If you cannot be patient, don’t start a training session. If you cannot focus on remaining patient when training your dog, it will quickly lose interest in what you are trying to teach.

When training your dog never punish him; doing so will only make him be resistant to any further training. You should take steps to help your pet avoid bad behavior, but if he makes a mistake help him understand correct actions. Build a positive relationship with your dog during the training process.

If you have a big dog who likes to spread out when he sleeps, you will need to get a big dog bed. You could get a rectangular bed designed specifically for large dogs or, better yet, a standard crib mattress. A crib mattress has advantages; one being that you can use crib sheets and then change them as needed. Crib mattresses come with the added benefit of being waterproof.

Make training for your dog a regular, repeated part of your time together to keep them familiar with the rules they’ve learned. A lot of owners will train their dogs once and not conduct any refreshers. However, pets and humans share similar habit systems. This is why on-going training is important.

If certain things trigger bad behavior in your dog, keep him occupied whenever you pass something that will tempt him to misbehave. When you are passing others, you should keep the dog busy and not paying attention to other dogs. Doing so helps to build up a strong relationship between the two of you.

Look for positive reinforcement methods that allow you to train your dog without the use of treats. Using treats as a reward for learning a new behavior works. However, it’s unlikely that you will carry treats around every single day for the rest of your dog’s life. Petting and hugging dogs as positive reinforcement while training is better than giving them treats.

If you have to go to work, or something else that will keep you out of the house for more than a few hours, take your dog for a long walk before you leave. This should tire him out a little. He will better handle the separation from you when he is tired and needs rest.

Have a blast during each training session with your dog. Try and develop a bond with your dog by playing with him, it will only encourage the dog to want to please you more during training. Training is fun for your dog, but it doesn’t always have to be about learning something new. Play for the sake of playing.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.

Teach Your Dog The Jump The Rope Trick

If you want to teach a dog to jump, use your right hand to hold a cane just high enough above the ground so that your dog can easily step over it, and in your left hand hold a piece of treat just in front of him, so that he will have to step over the stick to get it. As your dog grows older and he understands what you want him to do, he will be obliged to eventually jump over it to obtain the reward when you raise the stick a few inches at a time. If you want to accustom him to jumping without a reward, then occasionally refrain from rewarding him.

After a dog will jump over a stick he can be taught to jump over your extended foot or through a hoop or your arms; in fact, a small dog can be taught to jump through your arms much more easily than over a stick, as all you, have to do is to throw a treat on the ground and hold your arms in front of him so that he will have to walk through them to gain the reward, gradually elevating your arms so that he will be obliged to jump before you allow him to pass. Always encourage your dog by saying “Hip” whenever he jumps.

Rope Jumping

After a dog has learned to leap he can be taught to jump the rope, but this will require considerable practice. To start off, tie one end of the rope to some stationary object a few inches from the ground and hold the other end with your hand, drawing the rope taut close to the ground and try to accustom your dog to jumping over it while it is at rest, and don’t forget to use the word “Hip’ or “Hoop-la” each time he jumps.

When he does this satisfactorily you can give the rope a slight swaying motion and at the proper moment give him the word “Hip,” and if the rope is not swinging too fast or far he will in all probability jumps over it.

Gradually swinging the rope farther and faster until he learns to jump the rope satisfactorily is all that remains to be done after he will do this. It is possible to teach your dog to jump the rope standing on his hind legs even though he can jump the rope standing on four legs but this would be a difficult feat and puts considerable strain on the dog’s muscles, and it is not always advisable to force a dog to do it.

When it comes to retrieving, it is not the only game which you can engage with your dog as you can try the rope jumping game when you have got the chance, it can be good exercise and great fun for both of you too

Social animals that have worked with humans for thousands of years are dogs. They have played an important role in various different cultures. Dogs are intelligent and loyal and because of that, they are highly valued and it is important to train and care for them properly.

Dogs are important and despite of this, owners may still find that there are a lot of challenges in caring and training them. Few people know how to train a dog properly although many people want to own one. If a dog is not disciplined, then it will not bring happiness to its owners. There are a lot of people who allow their dogs to develop bad habits.

Purchasin quality food for your dog is what you would want to do even if it is a bit expensive. With cheap dog food, your dog will not be given the healthy look it should have. You would want your dog to have bright eyes and a shiny coat. Dogs will behave like their owners in many of the same ways since they are much like them.

Dogs should be treated like small children since they are just like them. You should not leave dogs alone for long periods of time since they are prone to getting into trouble. When dogs are left alone at home, they need to have a designated area with boundaries. To keep them occupied, leave some things such as chew toys.

When your dog behaves properly, make sure that you always praise and reward him. This teaches him that good behavior leads to rewards, while bad behavior does not. When you do this, you will find that your dog behaves properly on a regular basis. When your dog doesn’t behave properly, you should also discipline him, so that he understands the difference between right and wrong behavior.

There is a difference between discipline and abuse. There are some dog owners that don’t understand this, and hit or kick their dogs in order to train them. This is not an effective way to train your dog as this is considered as abuse and it may even cause your dog to attack you. You want your dog to respect you, not fear you.

A good way to discipline your dog without hitting him is to spray water on him and give him a verbal warning. In a non-abusive way, this will get the message across. When it comes to training your dog, it is very important. A dog which you can take out for a walk without worrying about him or bothering others is what you would want. You want a dog that will listen to your commands.

How To Teach Your Puppy The English Language

Puppies are willing to the right thing and are eager. When they have done something great, they love your happy face and the squealing noises you make. They get loving rewards for being a good dog, and because of this will do anything to please you. Your praises and cuddles are things they just can’t get enough of.

When you move towards “What a good dog!” from “Bad Puppy!” it is based on thing. Your puppy does not know the English language, and the faster he learns it, the better for all, because the minute he knows what you want he will DO it. Make it faster and easier for him to learn by keeping these tips in mind:

When teaching him commands, be sure to be consistent in the words that you choose. Instead of teaching one phrase for the day, you have asked him to learn three phrases if you say wanna go potty” in the morning, and “have to go out” two hours later, then “wanna go pee” a few hours later again. First, you need to decide which words to use and when you do, everyone in your family should also be using those words.

If you want action, then use his name in the command and never use it if you want him restricted from action. This is an important thing to remember. Making a puppy leap into action by his very nature is when he hears his own name. When you want your puppy to come to you, then say “come” and insert the name of your puppy, of course. When you want him to lie down, simply say, “Down”.

Do not confuse your puppy with the same words for different commands. If you are teaching him basic obedience, the word “Down” means LIE down, usually followed by “Stay.” If you don’t want him on the couch, do not say “Down”, say, “Off.” This word can be used to keep him from jumping up into your lap, onto the couch, chair or bed because it is the ACTION of jumping up you are trying to restrict. If you tell him “down” when he jumps onto the couch, then he will lie down on the couch! Do you see the difference?

You should never hit your puppy, and there’s no need to either. The worst punishment he ever needs to learn a lesson is your sad frown and walking away from him. Make sure that you don’t overdo this and one or two minutes is the limit. After a minute of ignoring him, give a command he knows well and praise praise praise, with a big smile.

Use these three tips with gentleness and consistency so that your puppy will learn all the words he needs to know to be a happy and obedient companion in a matter of days.

Dogs are not unlike other living creatures – without the proper maintenance, they can fall ill. The following are some of the nastiest parasites capable of causing canine ailments:

Heartworm. Heartworms are brought about by mosquito bites, and as the name implies, “home” is where your dog’s heart is, not to mention neighboring blood vessels. Some of the symptoms of a heartworm infection would be incessant coughing and a pallid appearance. You would want to keep your guard up during mosquito season and prevent the chances of infection by having your vet give your dog an anti-heartworm medication or vaccine.

Hookworm. Before a puppy is even born, it may already have hookworms – these are passed on by the mother dog, but usually done so during the nursing stage. Hookworms cause dog anemia and appetite loss.

Roundworm. Roundworms are not unlike hookworms in the sense they get transmitted in a dog in similar ways. Dogs with potbellies normally have some form of roundworm infestation. Some of the conditions caused by roundworms are dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, pneumonia and even stunted growth.

Tapeworm. Tapeworm is transmitted if a dog would swallow a flea that is carrying larvae inside of it. Much of the symptoms that are obvious rarely show, but in the dog’s feces, you could see deposits of rice-like appearance.

Whipworm. If a dog is infected with whipworms, it could lead to a number of severe digestive ailments, including, but not limited to diarrhea, bowel inflammation and stool mucus. Also, your dog may lose a good amount of weight due to the infection.

Fleas. Fleas, the commonest among external parasites, cause the dog to continuously scratch various parts of the body. Incessant scratching can lead to loss of fur. Consult your veterinarian for the best possible flea control regimen, as it is common for fleas to eventually become resistant to your usual store-bought flea control agents.

Lice. Lice are not as common as fleas and do not infect that often. On top of that, you can control them quite easily.

Ticks. Ticks can pose more serious problems than fleas because diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, or Lyme disease, can be contracted with ticks. You can use tweezers to remove ticks individually from your pet. Always consult your vet when in doubt as to how to remove ticks the right way – you do not just arbitrarily remove them from your dog’s fur. But if you know the right techniques, always place the ticks in a can with soap and water after removing them.

Pills

Liquid medication

Topical medicine and eye drops

Ear drops and ointment

With the right preventative measures, it is actually easy to ensure the good health of your pet dog. Consult your vet and head to his office the very moment you notice your dog looking or acting peculiar. Always be prepared for the unexpected during situations like this.

Does Your Dog Suffer From Allergies?

Some dog breeds are more susceptible to allergies than others. This may be because of small nasal passages, allergic reactions to flea bites, irritable stomachs that make digesting food difficult, or they may be allergic to their own hair and dander. Some of the breeds that most suffer from allergies are Bishon Frise, terriers, retrievers, beagles, setters, and boxers. All dogs have the potential to be allergic to something, however.

Skin rashes, patches of missing hair and raw skin, upset stomach, and watery eyes, are some of the common symptoms of allergies in dogs. The symptoms may subside after a few days, but you should still watch the dog to make sure they do not come back. If they do, your dog might need medical attention. Simply putting a flea collar on the dog might help him overcome allergy problems.

Allergies might also cause a change of moods in your dog. They may become irritable, lethargic, clingy, or angry. You won’t be able to fix these behaviors with discipline. Your best course of action is to figure out the most effective way to deal with the problem at hand. It would be very helpful for you to keep a journal of your dog’s activities and symptoms, so you can better explain the situation to your vet when you see him.

Some small breeds have breathing issues when they age, and the best thing you can do is to keep the area where they sleep, especially, free of pollutants and allergens by vacuuming often. While it is important that all dogs get their exercise, when it is cold outside, keep small breeds indoors and play with them. This will keep them from getting head colds, which could make breathing even worse.

If you notice that your dog has fleas or that they have been bitten by fleas, you should bathe your dog using a shampoo that will kill fleas and their eggs. You may need to rid your home of fleas as well so that reinfestation does not occur. A carpet spray usually helps, but for more severe problems you might need to call an exterminator. Once the fleas are gone, you should spray your dog every time the dog goes outside. This will prevent new attacks from occurring. Make sure that if you notice any wounds on the skin from scratching, you wait until they heal before you use any of the products for bathing and spraying.

Vomiting can occur if the dog is allergic to his food. Check with your doctor to make sure the dog is otherwise healthy. They may recommend a new food for the dog. If food was at fault, once you switch it, vomiting and diarrhea will stop.

Some dogs are allergic to their own hair and dander, and that’s unfortunately the worst case scenario since there is nothing you can really do. Provide regular grooming, bathe at least once a month, and brush daily. If things don’t improve or get worse, the vet might prescribe an anti-histamine.

A Guide To Dog Collar Options

Dog collars are an important accessory of man’s best friend – they include your dog’s registration tags, ID, and even leads (for leashes). This article deals with some useful information on collars – not necessarily need-to-know but useful nonetheless. Consider the following quick tips when shopping.

The first thing to look out for would be fit – how well does it fit around the neck of your dog? If the collar fits, then you have free hand when choosing the desired color or design – whatever floats your boat!

Smaller dogs such as toys would benefit from an average-sized collar in terms of weight. Going soft and light is best for puppy owners – nylon and thinner leather collars are good choices. As for bigger, stronger dogs, wider and heavier collars are best. By sticking two of your fingers in between the collar and your dog’s neck, you can guarantee the snug fit of the collar and be absolutely sure it is neither too wide or too narrow. But be sure to tightly stick your fingers inside, because the last thing you want is for the collar to be too loose fitting. And if you don’t cut off the excess length of strap, your dog might mistake it for his next meal.

A snap-on type fastener is the most common replacement for buckle collars, because it makes for easy adjustment of a collar’s length. While a training collar doesn’t look like anything to write home about, it’s a much better choice for puppies rather than one of those “cool” looking choke collars.

Moreover, leather collars are long-lasting and are naturally softened by the oils of a dog’s skin and they come in a variety of styles, widths, and colors. Nylon collars are washable and durable and are perfect for dogs that like to swim and for smaller dogs and puppies that need a softer touch. For bigger dogs, a nylon collar is okay, but it will need to be one with heavy webbing.

Since there are some dogs with specific needs, there are collars just right for them. Did you know that your canine Kelly Slater can have his own dog collar made from the same material as the wetsuits surfers wear? And for those impatient dogs that pull on your leash during walks, head collars are the best option and are often used in training. A harness can come in handy with an anxious or hyperactive dog as well, as it is positioned around the dog’s chest and ribcage to prevent choking – some harnesses even allow you to buckle your dog into your car!

We cannot even begin to tell you how many colors and designs are available, but most collars have their own leashes. Because it is important for your dog to feel as comfortable as possible, put careful time and consideration into your search for the perfect collar.

How To Deal With Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is very common among dogs. This involves behavior problems when they are left at home alone. This leads to excessive barking, whining, house soiling, and many more. If you observe that your dog can spend the night away from you with no problem, then he doesn’t have separation anxiety. However, if he has been throwing tantrums by showing some kind of dramatic anxiety response every time you leave home, your dog probably has it. It is important to understand that dogs behave in such way is not an attempt to seek revenge or punishment for leaving them behind. Your dog is just panicking because he is away from you.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common complaints of dog owners and in most cases they don’t even realize it. You should determine if your dog has it so you can deal with it.

Keep a boring, low-key departure. Your dog will get more anxious if you give big farewells. Just keep things casual. After you get home, you should ignore your dog for a few minutes, then pet him after.

Always provide him with lots of exercise and playtime. He’ll be happier this way. He will be much more contented to sleep during the day while you’re away. Your pet also needs mental exercises like training and socializing with other dogs.

Your dog should have some toys and treats to occupy him when he’s alone. Put some treats in his toys.

You need to train your dog to be accustomed to your departure. First, you can leave him for a few minutes, and then come back. Do not a make fuss over your dog. Keep doing this until he won’t panic anymore. You can then leave him for longer periods gradually. Do this over and over again so he’ll be used to it.

Give Doggie Some Dental Care

While dental care is undoubtedly important for humans like us, the same applies for dogs. A dog’s teeth, after all, can become encrusted with plaque after mealtime. Tartar would then be formed after plaque builds up – this is a rough brown element that destroys teeth. Tartar could easily make its way to your dog’s gums, resulting in gum disease and/or infections. So now you can see that a dog’s teeth are us fragile as those of humans. You always want to brush your teeth at least thrice a day. So what about your dog?

Teeth Brushing for Doggies

While humans brush thrice daily, dogs only need have their teeth brushed twice a week, according to most veterinarians in the know. Most pet supply stores carry specially designed toothbrushes and toothpaste just for dogs. Take note of this, though – a dog’s sense of smell and taste is more advanced than those of a human, so the fresh, flavorful zest found in mint toothpaste will taste abhorrent to your dog. Try brushing Rover’s teeth with Crest just once and it will likely be the last time he lets you anywhere near him with a toothbrush. Use the specially designed doggie toothpaste.

Doggie Treats To Chew On

If you feel that brushing your dog’s teeth is a chore, then don’t fret – this is perfectly normal. Probably you’ll want an alternative way to take care of your doggy’s dental needs if that is the case. A dog’s natural tendency to chew is a built-in dental care mechanism. Your average doggie treats, biscuits included, disintegrate into smaller pieces when chewed on and lubricate the teeth, cleaning them in their own way. Of course, your best option would still be to brush your dog’s teeth, but if you are not able to do this on a regular basis, perhaps you can consider doggie biscuits as a crunchy and effective alternative.

Mouth Disease 101 For Canines

A dog that does not get his teeth brushed regularly or get access to crunchy, chewy doggie treats may find himself in serious danger of mouth disease. Consider yourself lucky in this case if your dog merely develops a case of gingivitis (in layman’s terms – gum inflammation, a very common gum disease) but in some cases your dog may be infected by bacteria that could spread to his bloodstream and vital organs. It is your sole responsibility and nobody else’s to properly care for doggie’s teeth.

Doggie Howser, (Dental) MD

Dogs are like humans in the sense that they have their own special dentists. A dog’s teeth can be filled, capped, and extracted if necessary. But the top stratagem would not be to rely on your resident Doggie Howser for everything – you always want to avoid this by caring for your dog’s dental issues. Do not let your cuddly critter be howling in pain (honestly, you’d rather have him howl at the full moon) due to an unscheduled dentist visit. Let doggie dental care be a fail-safe rather than an urgent expenditure. After all, doggie dental care can cost you dearly.

The Basics Of Puppy Parasites

Besides food, water, exercise, and plenty of love and attention, your dog will rely upon you to manage his health. Your pooch is not like a person, even though he occasionally seems so. He is susceptible to a number of ailments, including worms and parasites. If these little bugs are allowed to fester inside your canine’s body, they can cause severe health problems.

Below, we’ll explain how the issue starts and why parasitic infections are so problematic, especially for puppies. You’ll also learn to recognize symptoms that suggest your puppy has a few stowaways inside his body. Lastly, we’ll describe how the condition is treated.

How The Infection Begins

Many owners would be surprised to know their puppies are likely to already have parasites and worms when they adopt them. Most pups will experience them at some point during their young lives. The mother is often the root cause.

If a puppy’s mother had not been regularly dewormed prior to becoming pregnant, she may have played host for an assortment of different parasites. If that was the case, it’s possible that your pup was infected while he was still in her womb. It’s also possible that he ingested the bugs while nursing. The parasites can travel along the placenta and find their way onto the mother’s mammary glands.

Another potential hazard is dog feces. Canines are routinely exposed to the feces of other dogs. This often happens while visiting parks or during walks. If there are parasite eggs present, your pooch can easily ingest them.

Recognizing The Symptoms

If your dog has developed a parasitic infection, he may begin to lose weight. It’s common for canines who are suffering from parasites and worms to lose their appetite and experience diarrhea. If the infection is serious, your dog may start to tire easily and display low energy levels. The quality of his coat might also decline and he’ll likely develop a pot belly.

How The Problem Is Resolved

Treating a parasitic infection involves several stages of deworming. The reason is because the medication that is used is only effective on adult parasites. Your puppy may ingest eggs and larvae, but the medication will not be effective on them until they mature. That can take months.

Experts recommend deworming be performed every two weeks for the first two months of your puppy’s life. Then, your dog should be dewormed again at three months. If the infestation is serious, plan to deworm him once a month for three additional months. It’s also important to clean any area in your home that your pup frequents. Otherwise, he may become infected again after having been dewormed.

It’s worth underscoring that your puppy will likely endure one or more health issues at some point before he reaches adulthood. Plan for it. Make a note of any symptoms that suggest he may have picked up stowaways. And make sure you’re taking him to his veterinarian on a regular basis. Treating these types of infections is easy, but your puppy relies on you to get them resolved.
