Smart Dogs and Hand Signals
You love your dog and he is your best friend. Better than that, he is family. Dogs are loyal and good companions. Their good naturedness among other qualities make them the ideal pet.
It is easy to teach you dog some basic tricks. You can achieve this using hand signals for dog training. They respond better to gestures because the are naturally instinctive and observant. Dogs are smart and easy to train.
It’s easy and fun to teach your dog hand signals. They understand this rather easily than verbal commands. At first though, you have to do both hand training signals and voice commands at the same time.
Get your dog familiarized with a verbal command and teach him its equivalent hand signal. This will require patience and you will have to do this over and over.
The most commonly used command is the “sit”. To teach this, you have to get your dog’s undivided attention. You can do this by calling out his name. When he is looking, point at him using your index finger and say “sit”. If he does not respond, you may physically put him in a sitting position, until he learns to do it himself.
It is essential that your dog learns the sit hand signal before you can teach him the “down” command. This trick is more difficult to teach due to the fact that dogs don’t like having their guards down. Prompt your dog to sit. Take a biscuit in your hand and hold it in front of your dogs nose. As you lower the treat to the floor, verbally say “down”. The dog should be able to follow the biscuit down to the floor. Practice, practice, practice.
Another useful trick for your dog is the come command. You can teach him a come hand signal. Start by teaching him to come using verbal prompts, then words and actions at the same time. Have some treats ready and give him one everytime he come to you when you call him.
