Why do dogs get stuck together when breeding
Have you witnessed dogs mating? Apparently, dogs are not fussy with regards to their breeding locations. In places where dogs are allowed to roam, these animals will be seen mating on the streets, on the beaches and practically anywhere. The distinct smell that is emitted by a bitch in heat serves as a kind of advertisement that announces her availability to male dogs.
A bitch in heat will be followed by its suitors. If the bitch allows a male dog to sniff and lick her vulva it means that she is receptive of the male’s attention. The bitch will show her willingness to be mated to the favored male dog. The bitch in heat will manifest a flagging behavior or the holding of the tail to one side to show that she is ready to be mated. Unlike male dogs that are always eager to copulate, female dogs are kind of choosy. Females will only accept the attention of male dogs if they are in the estrus stage of the reproductive cycle.
If the bitch is ready to be bred she will allow the male to mount her from behind. The bitch will give the male easy entry by holding the tail to one side. After mounting the bitch the dog’s penis will enter the vagina. Unlike human’s penis that has to be erect to achieve penetration, male dogs don’t need a stiff penis to be able to enter the bitch’s vagina. This is because a dog’s penis has a small bone called baculum that makes the penis rigid. The erectile tissues of the penis will be filled with blood after penetration is achieved. Due to the swelling of these bulbus glandis tissues the penis will be trapped inside the vagina . For this reason mating dogs will be stuck together.
The male dog usually swings the legs over the bitch so that the dogs will be facing opposite directions while remaining connected. This position is one of the amazing works of nature that make sure that the breeding will be productive. The mating tie will last from 20 to 30 minutes and the dogs will only be able to separate after the bulbus glandis have returned to its normal size. The mating tie ensures that the sperm will not leak but be conveyed to the canal. As mentioned, a bitch in heat will emit a distinct smell that will let male dogs know about her availability thus a bitch in heat will be surrounded with male dogs.
The mating tie guarantees that dominant dogs cannot interrupt the mating.
