My Dog Will Not Cease Biting The Furniture

Furniture, shoes, toys and tennis balls are all prime targets for the little puppy that you’ve just brought home. When this happens, you might be inclined to discipline your dog but avoid doing this.

You might be regretting ever bringing the adorable little pup home just about now, seeing that anything within paw’s reach just gets chewed to bits. This is normal and all puppies will go through this stage. There’s not much else to be done except keeping anything that’s easily chewable out reach.

It is very important that during this stage, the type of food that you feed your puppy is crucial. Since they have sensitive teeth, puppies need specially prepared food that isn’t too hard for them to chew and swallow. Sometimes the teething problem can be bad enough that your dog just will not want to eat. If this happens for a consecutive days, visit the vet for professional advise.

Chewing on anything that might splinter like wood or bones should be avoided though you can buy special chewing bones from the pet store designed for dogs with overly sensitive teeth. Chewing on these type of objects should be encouraged as it can help your dog get past this stage of its life.

As they are not much different from babies and know no better, don’t give them any toys that can break off into smaller pieces that might accidentally be swallowed. Safe toys can be anything from a rag doll to an old tennis ball, anything that you don’t need or want any longer can be used as a chew toy.

Other dangerous items around the house that could harm a dog would be anything with an electrical current running through it (obviously). Puppies just love biting through cables and similar items so keep them out of reach of your dog.

In the case where you need the wires lying about the house or if they’re a permanent fixture, then you can apply some safe but distasteful ointment onto the cables to stop your dog from wanting to ever chew on it again.

Just know that this teething period will pass in good time so in the meantime, you job will be to keep a close eye on your dog to make sure it plays safely. Never leave your puppy to run around on its own unsupervised in the garden.

Often, breeding puppies can be a very rewarding yet frustrating experience, especially when it misbehaves and starting chewing up your new $2000 couch. You might have smacked your puppy when it misbehaved in some way, and if you have been doing so, you should stop now.

That is not how you should be training your dog and studies have shown that physical punishment is not an effective training method when it comes to any type of animal.

As puppies are not any different to human babies, smacking your dog will not help much because it is still in its infancy and does not understand the difference between right and wrong. All you are really doing is scaring the poor animal and causing it to distance itself from you.

Just like babies, pups just do not know what you mean when you whip or hit your dog. Even though it might be doing something that you’re unhappy with, it doesn’t know that. What it knows however, is to associate pain and fear when it sees you coming its way.

Dog owners who smack their puppies constantly end up with adult dogs who are rebellious and unfriendly. Not only that but the dogs tend to not trust their masters either, keeping their distance whenever possible. This is not the kind of relationship you want to start off with.

Shouting can also be terrifying for a puppy. While you think that shouting will cause no harm, the consequences are the same as hitting, and your dog will not trust you as much.

Instead of being vocally loud, a more effective training method you should employ would be to speak to your dog in a very firm tone to get it to cease doing what it was doing. Then pick up your pup and give it a huge to give it reassurance and some love.

Finally, treat a your little one just as you would with a human being. Be gentle and show it kindness, and never display anger in any way, either vocally or physically. Follow these rules of conduct and you’ll surely end up with a loving dog who will always serve and protect you.
