Dog Training Information

It’s widely accepted among the vast majority of dog training experts that the most effective and humane way to train your dog is through a process called positive reinforcement training. This is a fancy phrase for what’s essentially a very simple theory:

Using positive reinforcement entails rewarding the behavior that you wish to see repeated, and ignoring the behavior that you don’t. This method is in direct contrast to some of the now-outdated but once-popular techniques for dog training, some of which were frankly abhorrent: physical pain and intimidation (such as hanging an aggressive dog up by her collar), or inhumane methods of aversion therapy (such as shock collars for barking).

It is your dogs natural instinct to please you, positive reinforcement lessons are more meaningful and tend to last longer in a dogs mind, when a dog learns what you are asking of it under its own actions (your dog sits, you say,”sit”, nice “sit” and reward, as opposed to forcing your dog to sit).

When you use positive reinforcement training, you are giving your dog time and the chance to use its own brain. Some ways you can use this training process:

- Use meaningful rewards. Dogs get bored pretty quickly with a routine pat on the head and a “good girl” (and, in fact, most dogs don’t even like being patted on the head

- Have you ever seen a dog bark or cower a way when a hand come toward their head? To keep a high standard and quality in your dogs learning use more tempting incentives for the desired behavior. A favorite food or treat gives your dog much more incentive. Also know as “primary incentives.”

- In other words, they’re both significant rewards that most dogs respond powerfully and reliably to.

How To Perfect Dog Ownership

1. Being to harsh with your dog and especially in its early years, will have severe consequences to the mental state of the dog. It will leave the dog feeling unwanted and unloved and it might even lead to a depression.

2. Do not make your dog overeat. To much food will hurt its physique and will make a major impact on its well being. As your dog gets fat from overeating it will lose its energy and joy and you’ll end up with a fat, lazy and unhappy pet.

3. Giving your dog your leftovers might seem like a fun an generous gesture but human food can actually hurt your dog. To give your dog what will serve it best you might consult with your local VET to find out what your specific breed of dog requires.

4. Taking your dog out for a walk every single day is a must. Go for half an hour as least one time a day. If you own a larger breed you might need to go for a walk two or three times a day to satisfy the dog’s physical needs.

5. Playing with your dog is not only important to the physique of the dog but it is also an important learning and training tool that will make your dog behave better and your dog and owner relationship will also improve.

6. Attend dog training classes to learn how to properly manage, train and get your dog obey commands. A dog needs to know who is in charge and it is important that you are that leader.

7. Love your dog. It might seem obvious but just like humans a dog needs to know that it is loved. You can express your love with words and physical gestures. Make it a daily habit to show your dog that you love it dearly.

8. Showing your dog respect and fairness will go a long way. Your dog can sense much more than your think and if it feels that its leader respects it you can be sure that it will respect you back and be much more willing to follow your commands.

Dog vitality and well being is very important in order to have a fun and peaceful pet. As a dog owner you should spend enough time and energy in teaching your dog and yourself the optimal ways to love and respect each other as you will probably be together for a long time.

Guide To Getting Rid Of Fleas

Dog fleas are a problem that too many of us have been plagued with, but more importantly too many of our beloved pets have been plagued with. Getting rid of fleas is not an easy task, but with the proper plan and a certain amount of diligence it is possible to live a flea free life again. Let’s go through the steps necessary to get rid of fleas and keep them from coming back.

Before you make a plan, it’s important to realize a couple of things. One, fleas on your dog are only about 5% of the total fleas in and around your house. Two, live fleas are also only part of the infestation – flea eggs, larvae and pupae will all be present, and even when all live fleas have been killed, those eggs, larvae and pupae will develop into more fleas over the next two weeks unless they are dealt with as well.

1 -Rid your house of fleas – first, take your dog outside so that he won’t be spreading fleas back to the areas that you have just cleaned. Second, pick up anything and everything that is on the floor in all of your living spaces, including bedrooms, bathrooms, closets ? everywhere your dog has access to fleas will exist. Wash EVERYTHING – launder your clothes, sheets, dog toys, dog bedding, blankets etc. Anything that can’t be dried, hang up to dry outside in the sunlight.

Now do a thorough cleaning of your entire house, using the vacuum on all carpeted and upholstered items, and soap and water on all hard surfaces. Steam cleaning your upholstery is a good idea if you have access to a steam cleaner. One thing to be careful of after vacuuming is to dispose of the vacuum bag so that fleas or larvae do not re-emerge and create a new infestation. Remember that surfaces in your basement, garage, and patio also need cleaning if your dog is in contact with these areas. One last place that is often forgotten about is the car – you will want to vacuum or steam clean the upholstery to get rid of fleas that have taken up residence in your vehicle. Once you have cleaned all surfaces, have a professional flea treatment done of your entire house. Make sure you and your pets don’t return until the recommended amount of time has passed.

2 – Rid your outdoor spaces of fleas – any fleas that are outside the home are a problem as well, since they will be brought back into the house again the first time you dog visits these areas. At the same time that you are having your house treated for fleas, it is a good idea to have your yard and any other outdoor space treated as well. Remember to pay special attention to dark humid places where fleas typically like to hide, such as corners, cracks, and underneath things like your patio deck.

3 – Get rid of fleas on your dog – now is the time to get rid of the adult fleas on your dog. Give your dog a bath with dog shampoo, and then thoroughly dry him. Once he is dry, double check that all fleas have been killed by going over your dog with a flea comb. It’s probably a good idea to throw your dog washing clothes in the laundry, just in case some fleas jumped to you for safety during the bath.

4 – Get rid of fleas for the next two weeks – this step is as important as the first three steps combined. There will be a number of flea eggs, larvae and pupae that were not caught by the initial treatment, so it is important to continue vacuuming (remember to dispose of the vacuum bag each time) and washing items that may contain these pre adult fleas over the next two weeks. If you don’t do this follow-up to keep fleas at bay, you will simply have an entirely new batch of fleas to deal with in one or two weeks time.

The concern to eat healthy foods seems to equally apply to humans and pets, since many animal owners prefer to buy organic products to feed their four-legged friends. One could be surprised at the large organic dog food offer available on the market. Just like for humans, there are unsurpassed health issues that one could put a stop to or prevent in the first place.

Thus, organic dog food will reduce the risk of the pet developing skin diseases and allergies. The reason for the positive health effect is the lack of pesticides, additives, colorants and other chemicals. Instead there will be just grain extracts and high quality proteins as ingredients of organic dog food.

Organic dog food also brings more nutrients, and this aspect is reflected in the most relevant of ways in the higher levels of energy and the healthy weight of the pet. Regular dog food often causes diabetes and overweight with all the additional problems that accompany these health issues: back ailment, organ failure and decreased mobility. What’s the trick about organic dog food here? Well, organic food items for pets are free of bulk fillers, they are nutrient-packed products that create energy not fat deposits. Yet, it is best and a lot easier to prevent health issues than to treat them after-wards.

Good digestion and overall stronger immunity: these are other main benefits that come together with the use of organic dog food. Because of the lack of chemicals regularly present in normal pet food, your dog will no longer vomit, experience gas or diarrhea. A healthier metabolism is thus what you will mainly achieve with a constant healthy diet. Then, the quality of the nutritional substances in organic dog food boosts up the immunity functions eliminating the risk for infections and all sorts of specific diseases that affect dogs on a common basis.

To put it in a nutshell, veterinarian experts say that with organic dog food, the life span of any animal can increase significantly, not to mention the fact that it will go a lot better through old age. In the majority of cases, pet owners that choose organic dog food, normally use organic products for their meals too. Ask your dog food provider about organic dog food, and if you don’t find what you need with the local shop, try the online order. There are plenty of web pages that sell such products at fairly decent prices.

In the last Ten years there have been many animal healing methods developed. Adding to the older traditional systems such as acupuncture for animals to the newer methods such as the Trust Technique. These animal healing applications are all working to help animals balance energetic levels. In this article I would like to share with you how animal communication can benefit any of these animal healing methods.

Reiki for animals, Spiritual Healing, Body Spin, Body Talk, Bowen for animals, The Trust Technique are just a few of the animal healing techniques out there!

Even though there are many different methods and name for animal healing, they are all working on the same idea. That the animal is a being made up of physical, emotional and spiritual parts. To create true healing then we have to look at the whole picture in a holistic way.

When one part of the animal is out of balance this can have a huge effect on other parts of the animal. For example emotional tension will also be holding tension within the body. Over time the body will not function properly and ailments can accrue.

Animal communication taps into the emotional, physical and spiritual feelings of the animal. This is the reason why it is so beneficial to animal healing.

Communicating with animals is not the same as how we communicate with people. We use a language of words that animals can not copy. What we can share with them is far stronger that this word structure. We share raw feelings with them, for love to fear!

Animal communication aids animal healing in many ways. Just like us going to the doctor we communicate what the problem is so that the doctor can treat us. With communication we can understand our animals problems much better. Also there is another effect, when we are in this empathic mind set it is a place of compassion and this has it own healing effect. We also have to remember that communication is a two way process it is not just about picking up feelings. we can deliver peaceful and comforting feelings as well and these have a dramatic effect on healing.

Communication works well with other animal healing methods buy creating understanding a trust between the animal and the human. With any true healing there needs to be this trust other wise the animal will not open to the healing being preformed.

If you are currently working with animal healing then finding out how to communicate with animals is really important. You will already to doing it on some level but consciously learning will open up more detail and trust between you and the animal. Animal communication is easy to learn so if you have not already find out more about it! And let your animal healing be taken to the next level.

Educating Your Dog

Dogs can be considered to be clean animals. They would rather not dirty the area where they eat and sleep. They also have tendencies to eliminate on grass or dirt rather on concrete or gravel. With this natural tendencies of your dog, you can train them rapidly and successful at your home.

To start training your dog, you need to set up a few things in your house. One, you will need to have an established living area for your dog. It can be a bathroom, a part of the kitchen or a garage. You will also need to spend time with your dog in its area. It should also be able to play, eat and sleep in this area. And make sure that you have a special bed placed in his den. It can be an open crate or a large cardboard box. Do not get frustrated if your dog eliminates in its area. It will only do this in the beginning, but once he figure out that this is its own space, it will avoid dirtying the place.

When the time comes that your dog gets comfortable with his own bed, you can now move his bed anywhere you want inside the house. As owner, you can also strap your dog in the house so it will follow you where you want to go. Thus you can recognize his habits.

Second, you need to establish a toilet area for your dog. Make sure that the area can be access by your dog. In the beginning you need to accompany your dog while he eliminates until he develops a strong habit to eliminate at this area. And to make it easier for you and your dog, make a regular feeding schedule. Thus, if you know that your dog needs to eliminate, then you can take her to her toilet area. Usually a healthy adult dog can control his bladder and bowels for 8 hours.

One thing you shouldn’t do is to lock up your dog without giving him access to his toilet. Be warned, that when your dog soiled his room or his bed, it would be hard for you to train your dog and he can have a habit on soiling in his den.

Another way that you can speed up the training process is through reward. You can reward your dog every time it eliminates in its toilet area. You must also avoid shouting at your dog for accidents or mistakes that it did. This can confuse your dog and might slow down his training process.

Creating a large room for your dog can sometimes make your dog relieves on his room. Make it a bit smaller and take your dog often to his toilet. Urinary problems and medical conditions in your dog can also cause him to soil in his bed when he is sleeping. Lastly, most dogs relieve more often if he drinks too much water due to boredom or habit. So owners should minimize their dog’s water intake and try putting something in his room so he won’t get bored. And always ensure that your dog is enjoying his room.

Crate Training Puppies the Easy Way

I have owned dogs all my life, and one thing that I have recently learned that crate training puppies can be really helpful, and save a lot of stress when you are housebreaking your puppy.

When you decide you are going to crate train your puppy you need to make sure that you buy the correct size crate – he needs to be able to stand up in it (at adult size) and move around. The metal crates are the best.

A puppy will think of his crate as his little home, and they will never intentionally mess in it. So long as you do not leave him in his crate too long he will hang on until you let him out into your chosen toilet area. You should never leave a young pup for more than an hour or so, otherwise he is likely to wet or mess it.

To get your puppy used to the crate, put a small treat in there which he will go in and get. Do this quite a few times and praise him every time he goes into the crate.

When your puppy comes out of the crate, don’t make a big fuss of him, just a little pat will be enough. Don’t make the mistake of letting him out if he is crying – you will be telling him that he has to cry to get out of his crate.

Continue this for a few days, then gradually leave him in there when you are not in the room, but only for a few minutes – he will soon get used to being in there. When you go back into the room, don’t make a fuss, simply walk over to him and open the crate. After about 3 days you will be able to leave him for an hour or so.

Do this for several days and then you can begin to go out of the room for a few minutes. It will not take him long to get used to being in his crate. You can increase the length of time you are away from him, but make sure when you go back to him, and open the door you should not make any fuss of him, just a small pat. Don’t ever let him out when he is crying, or he will think that this is what he has to do to be let out of his crate.

Try not to leave a puppy any longer than this, as their bladders are not very strong when they are young, and you don’t want him to make a mess in his crate. As he gets older and is properly house-trained, you will be able to increase this time a little.

Your puppy will love his crate and feel totally safe and secure in it. An added advantage of having a crate trained puppy is that is you do need to go out you can be sure that he will be relaxed and happy in his crate, so long as he has a blanket or bed and a few toys to amuse him. Often when a puppy is left alone he will become anxious and this is when he is likely to start chewing, barking and making a nuisance of himself. So if you don’t want to come home to a destroyed house (it’s surprising how much damage a small puppy can do when he is stressed), then all of your crate training will be a real asset, as he just will not feel anxious or stressed because he knows you will be coming back to him, as you always do.

If your dog has just started digging up your garden then you need to take quick action. Stop your dog from digging in the garden, by giving him an alternative activity. You see for a dog to dig is instinctive. You can’t really get it totally out of his system.

You see dogs dig instinctively. They bury their bones in the sand only to dig them up later. It’s like a huge sandpit to play in. The smell of manure attracts them to explore and search for the source. Roots of certain plants and shrubs also smell good to dogs and they can’t resist to dig them up.

Follow these guidelines to a better behaved dog:

1. Usually when we are working in the garden our dogs see this as a game. He will also start digging around where you work and just can’t dig fast enough to get to the prize. It’s cute to see but destructive to your plants. Have your garden hose ready with the sprinkler attached. Get up slowly and turn on the tap to full blast. The water will gush out onto him and he will stop digging. You will have to persist a few times with this. In a while he will think it is the sprinkler who is unhappy with him and not you. He should stop digging after a while.

2. If this doesn’t work, get a strong water pistol from a store. Walk around the places where he is digging and start shooting him with the water. Don’t shoot directly into his eyes as you could cause damage. He will not like it because the water is interrupting his play time and will get annoyed after a while. Do this also a few times until he gets the message. You must not say anything during this time. He must be brought to believe that it’s the water that is disciplining him and not you.

3. Does your dog seem hyperactive or does he chew destructively? He could be bored and then he could be digging without really chasing anything. You need to take him out of his surroundings for a least an hour to two hours a day. Dogs need change of sights and smells to stimulate them mentally. Try to build up a sense of expectation in your dog for his long walks with you. He will tend to rather wait to get out than dig up your flowers.

4. Lastly, try giving him his own patch of garden to dig and play in. Make it attractive for him by burying treasures like toys and bones in his area. Get excited when you show him how to dig them up. This will become a really nice way to Stop your dog from digging in the garden, as he will discover his own playground is much better fun than yours.
