How to Teach Dogs Tricks
Do you want to have fun with your dog and bond even more? Then teaching him tricks might be just what you are looking for. If you are patient both you and your dog will learn a lot.
The fastest way to create great results is to be generous in rewarding your dog for good performance. Positive reinforcement will help you to keep your dog motivated.
Furthermore, when practicing, keep in mind not to overdo it. Keep the sessions nice and sweet. Have fun for a few minutes, and then stop teaching your dog while you both still find it enjoyable. This way you make sure that he does not get bored by the practice sessions.
To make your dog enjoy the training sessions, finish each session off with a short playing session. Okay, so let’s get going… what tricks can you teach your dog?
“Paw”: This trick is a nice way to begin teaching dog tricks because it is so easy. All you want your dog to do is to shake your hand. Make him sit in front of you, then simply take his paw into your hand. This is what you will want him to do. As you do so, say “paw”.
Of course, rewarding your dog is key. So reward him, when you are holding his paw. Repeat this procedure several times. When you think he gets it, hold out your hand for him to put his paw on and give the verbal command. When he does so, reward him.
The trick “catch”: You should find that this trick is rather easy for your dog to learn, because it comes to many dogs rather naturally.
Merely toss a treat (small enough in order that they will not choke on it and large enough for them to examine it) into the air and when your dog sees it they’re going to grab it before it will hit the ground.
It might take a little while for your dog to be able to perform the trick. So just stay patient as always, and keep practicing. In time, your dog should be able to do just fine. Once he gets it, it will be a lot of fun for both of you.
