How to Keep Your Dog Healthy

Dogs are like humans. They will benefit from as much preventative medicine as we can offer them, and they’ll also benefit from their owners being attentive to the tell-tale signs of ticks, and fleas, and other dog aliments.

If your dog licks her paws, she might an allergy that leads to fleas or ticks. You want to be on the look-out for your dog sneezing or scratching itself, your dog licking its feet or rubbing its face, or hair loss and scabs and sores. One treatment is to give your dog regular dog baths, at least once or twice a week, along with a regular rub down with a wet cloth. Fleas can carry other parasitic organisms, such as tapeworms, and these tapeworms can lead to allergic reactions, anemia, hair loss, and infections. Ticks can carry the deadly Lyme disease.

Worms take second place in the list of possible dog aliments, after fleas that is. The worms may come in the form of heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, or whipworms. If your dog has worms, some of the symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, lost weight or lethargy. Worms are typically not noticeable without stool examination or blood tests. Take your dog in for an annual check-up for worms, and other infestations.

Canine Distemper affects the nervous system and organs. Its a good idea to vaccinate your dog for this disease as it can be fatal. Rabies is also preventable through vaccination. Rabies happens when one infected generally transmitted by the bite of an infected animal to non-infected animal. It is almost always fatal and can be transmitted to humans. Coronavirus, Kennel Cough, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Parvo are diseases that include symptoms such as coughing, labored breathing, and weight loss, as well as vomiting or diarrhea.

Early detection is the best way to keep your dog a fit and happy dog. Take your dog to the vet and ask about vaccinations. A lot of diseases can be prevented by a simple vaccination. Not only will you help keep your dog happy, but you’ll do yourself good as well. After all, humans are not immune to dog diseases. If your dog gets fleas, you might find yourself starting to itch.

Diet is equally important. You might want to start buying hypoallergenic dog food from the vets or start making your own home-made dog-food.

With the commercial pet food industry being under the gun in recent times, it can be hard for any of us to believe that we will not be seeing more pet food recalls in the near future. The sad truth is that the dog food we buy in the stores has the potential to cause extreme illness to our dogs.

These recalls weren’t just small isolated cases – some of them were widespread and affected thousands of households.

Many pet owners lost their dogs – someone they considered members of their families – over tainted dog food incidents. Many dog lovers will never trust the commercialized dog food industry ever again.

The problem isn’t just with dog food that has been recalled – it extends far beyond this. Commercial dog food is produced in a way that would make most people cringe. Since it’s all about cutting costs for the companies they put in all sorts of fillers that have been linked to all sorts of health problems.

The trend recently has been for us humans to eat better. The more nutritious the food is that we consume means we live healthier lives. Paying attention to diet and avoiding foods that have excessive fats and processed sugars, especially in the processed foods we buy, helps us to maintain bodies that are fit and trim.

However we often don’t think twice about what we are feeding our dogs when we pick up a bag of food for them. However, the same theory applies to any animal – what you feed them has a direct impact on their health and quality of life.

The companies that produce commercial dog food rely on some of the worst possible ingredients when they put together their “formulas”. They look for the cheapest ingredients that just meet the laws in order to make the most money. The health risks are horrendous.

As an example, corn gluten is a by-product that is found in dog foods. This is used because it is an incredibly cheap filler. However, not only is it an extremely poor source of protein, but it is one of the most common causes of allergies in dogs.

Another disturbing ingredient used in dog food is chicken by-product meal. Where this comes from is sickening – it is made up of chickens feet, intestines, necks etc. Again, it is an inexpensive ingredient that they are trying to claim is a source of protein. However, the protein is useless and this also has the potential to be tainted or toxic.

Many dog foods include soybean meal in order to provide a source of protein. The ingredient itself isn’t unhealthy, however soybean is the number one cause of allergies in dogs. It just doesn’t make sense to include this considering how many dogs are allergic to it.

There are other ingredients to consider, but I think you have gotten the gist of why some of the major brands of dog food that are on the supermarket shelves should be avoided.

When you do your research about feeding your dog the right foods, you will be amazed at the changes you see. Your dogs mood, energy levels, skin, bathroom habits and even their behavior will improve. It’s amazing what a change in diet will do.

This article isn’t supposed to scare you off of commercial dog food entirely, but you do need to know what to look for. Use the link at the bottom of this article for more information about finding the right foods for your pup.

There are resources available to begin feeding your dog with food that is not only tasty, but also nutritious to their dietary needs. You want your dog to live a long, happy and healthy life – do what you can to help them out by feeding them the right diet.

This is the story of our Border Collie cross called Badger and how when conventional dog training was unable to solve her numerous issues, I discovered Animal Communication which provided me with the insight and understanding to help her become a happy and fulfilled dog. In fact, I would have to say that Animal Communication changed my life and enhanced my dog training for ever!

My husband and I decided our life had reached a point where something else was needed to share our life so we decided to get a puppy! We read up on all the dog training methods until we were ready to go and get her.

Training started from day 1. All the usual commands, sit, stay, leave, wait were coming along nicely! What a clever puppy we had chosen (or had she chosen us?!) and we were so pleased we had taken the time to read all the different dog training methods, things were coming along very nicely!

Approximately 5 weeks later, I didn’t know who this puppy was any more. She certainly wasn’t the cute little thing we picked up who lit up our lives. She had started showing her teeth to me which then went on to snarling if I went near her toys or food. I was distraught, what had happened to us? What had gone so wrong?

Eventually she bit me. This was bad enough but she didn’t stop there. Her growling, snapping and snarling was so unpredictable she started doing the same thing to my husband and any visitors to the house or in fact if we were visitors in their house. She would spend hours in her bed just staring at us, she guarded her toys, food, water absolutely anything even a piece of paper What had we done so wrong, was she trying to tell us something?

Life became very limited to say the least. We could not trust her in any situation any more and the invitations to friends and families with the dogs dwindled to nothing, too many people were understandably now frightened of her. No-one to look after her so that we could have a holiday, days out were limited to a few hours. We were at a total loss as to what to, we could no longer get through to her and we felt she was out of control I guess we all were by this time.

Various techniques and methods were used by the numerous Trainers and Behaviourists we consulted. Nothing worked, in fact if anything they made her worse. She was now aged 1 and fully grown, what a hopeless situation, where did we go from here? What next.. anything?

Life by now was incredibly stressful. We couldn’t carry on living like this, was she going to bite me today? Was she ever going to change? Is this just the way it is always going to be? Can we cope? We just wished we could understand her we knew that one day something serious would happen and then it would all be too late. Re-homing was out of the question as she would never actually leave the rescue centre as she had already displayed aggression. It had been suggested to us that she should be put too sleep for her own good was it time to make that decision?

We just couldn’t give up on her. My husband and I both had good and bad days where one or the other would just about reach the end of their tether and say ‘I’ve had enough’ but the other would always coax them forward to get through another day. Animal Communication had been suggested to us at around this time and as a last ditched attempt we decided to make contact.

Desperate for our questions to be answered we contacted the recommended Animal Communicator – James French and waited for the insight and understanding of our dog that we so craved.

Well, what can I say, simply life changing for all of us! This may seem like I have jumped rather quickly to a happy ending but this is quite simply what happened! James gave us the insight we so desperately needed and the understanding that was required to move forward. He told us what she needed and quite frankly what she did not need!

After all this time we learned that our dog was not aggressive she was in constant pain as her digestive system was not processing her food, no wonder she didn’t like being touched and was so body sensitive.

We also learnt that whilst we knew she was highly anxious and dominant she was mirroring me?! This took a bit of time to sink in to be honest How could this be? How can that happen? I had done everything possible to ensure I was a responsible dog owner Where had I gone so wrong? And then my light bulb moment we were now 3 years on and I was a nervous wreck! The situation with Badger had made me this way and I was keeping us that way time to change!

We made immediate changes starting with her food. We threw away the high quality biscuits and replaced it with a complete raw diet and amazingly very soon after we started to see some changes, we were too scared to breath was this really happening? After all this time were we at last making progress?! I also had some work to do too! If Badger was my mirror then I had to start looking at my own life and start to make my own changes.

The first thing to go was my very stressful job, the second change was actually the realisation that I didn’t actually have any ‘me’ time at all. My idea of relaxing was to catch up on the ironing whilst watching the TV. The most important decision was deciding that I wanted to train to be an Animal Communicator too, I just had to get out there and help others who had suffered like us.

To think that had Badger been with different owners in all likelihood she would have been dumped at an animal shelter where she would never have been re-homed or even worse, she could have been put to sleep if this was our story how many other dog owners had similar problems? And how many other dogs were needlessly put to sleep?

After numerous exams I am pleased to share with you that I am now a very proud fully qualified Animal Communicator! Dog training is still an everyday occurrence in our household but with the combination of the Animal Communication wow.what an enhancement! If you want to get the most out of training your dog then get the understanding and insight required to make training applicable and fun! Dog training manuals are generic and dogs like people are not, each and every one is totally special and unique. go on I urge you to find out how unique you won’t regret it!

What Are Premium Dog Foods?

Premium dog foods are most certainly better than an economy dog food. But it’s sometimes hard to figure out the difference between a premium dog food and the rest. Do you go by price alone? A lot of companies are betting on it. Does it say premium on the bag? What makes a premium dog food premium?

A true premium dog food has better quality ingredients. This means your dog will get more and better nutrients that he desperately needs. But don’t be fooled by all the enticing bags in the market today. Don’t be lured in by the beautiful pictures of fresh foods and advertising stating how your dog needs something in this dog food. The dog food ingredients list is what you need to find.

Look at the first 2 ingredients to see if you are purchasing a premium dog food. Economy dog foods use a lot of low quality grains and meat by-products. Premium dog foods list an animal meat as the first ingredient.

Grains: Economy dog foods usually have a grain as the first ingredient, premium dog foods will not. Dogs are able to digest some grains well, like rice and oats, but have difficulty with corn and wheat.

Another problem with the type and quality of grains/carbs used by the economy dog foods is that they are common sources of food allergies for dogs. They are also usually the by-products of the grain, not the whole grain itself, and thus has virtually no nutritional value to your dog. The grains/carbs really turn out to be nothing more than a way to make your dog feel full.

A meat by-product is not a top 2 ingredient in premium dog foods. Meat by-product is just what is left over after all the usable meat has been removed. This includes the bones, head, intestines, and blood.

Like the grain by-products, these provide very little nutritional value to your dog, but do boost up the protein ratio in the dog food. The quality of the meat by-product is another big mystery that no one seems to be able to answer.

Most premium dog food brands will have a animal meat or meat meal as the first ingredient. This means the major ingredient in the food is an actual animal protein which will have the most usable nutrients available for your dog.

What about price? Is that a good indicator of the type of dog food? Not really. Of course if you see a really cheaply priced dog food, it is probably an economy food. But just because the food is expensive, does not automatically mean it is a healthy, premium dog food. Again, you need to take a peek at the dog food ingredients list to really know what you are getting.

And now there are more types of dog food, like organic and all-natural. To find out more about the different types of foods available for your dog and how to carefully choose the best premium dog foods for your beloved pet at the Healthy Dog Food blog.
